If there’s one Fashion item that has managed to push my minimalist style sense’s boundaries, it has to be the Cuban collar shirt. Tony Montana’s brazen attitude and Che Guevara’s fearless speeches, whilst donning this fashion item, has to be the reason this fascination even begun. A little research home, and I find that Shammi Kapoor was never seen in anything other than this wide collared shirt.
Cuban collared shirts are believed to have been originated in South America in the 18th Century. These were essentially a men’s working shirt. These made their way to America and were a rage in the 50s. These quickly became a wardrobe staple piece of the decade and everyone owned at least one; from hipster teens, fathers to even celebrities like Elvis Presley.
It was imperative, that to do justice to the minimal and even subtle glamour of the Cuban Collar, we decided to shoot it outside Ritz Cinema. Ritz was a posh cinema in the 1930-40s. It was an important part of Delhi’s social life which revolved around Kashmere Gate, a favourite for shopping, entertainment and eating out before Connaught Place was built. Ritz was the only cinema to have a bar and a billiards table. However, the cinema hall isn’t as inviting as it used to be. Being a stone throw’s away from my University, I have enjoyed a matinee with friends here, and in the company of shopkeepers who probably come there regularly for its inexpensive ticket prices.
