Custom made Jeans in Delhi: An experience
Let’s not beat around the bush and put it right at the start – Aalok and I don’t believe that Denim is a trend. Sure, Denim has come a long way from being considered a muted classic to quite an earful drama queen. The Cool Girl/Boy Staple has stepped out of its comfort zone and comes in various shapes and forms – from frayed and flared to embellished and color blocked.
However, it isn’t easy to find the right jeans despite the Indian Market getting bombarded with all kinds of Denim as soon as the fad arrives ( read: 3 months later) and ease of shopping from International websites – sometimes the fit isn’t correct and mostly we end up making “peace” with the best we can lay our hands on.
A month back, Aalok was rummaging through Pinterest only to discover a picture of Kurt Cobain from the MTV VMA Awards’92 ( here ). To put in Millennial perspective – he was no less than SHOOK. The tattered jeans sewed on with old suede and cotton patches, made the denim averse Aalok jump out of his chair and say – “I WANT THESE JEANS.” DIYing his existing pair of jeans, which is, by the way, falling apart seemed like a good idea to me. However, Aalok didn’t want to touch his only jeans which has with time worn out so much that, “it doesn’t feel like Jeans to my skin and it is sacred to me, go away”, made me look for other ways.
Not to our surprise, there was nothing – in terms of color, wash or fit online and offline that could come close to the jeans Kurt wore. To be honest, we knew that finding similar patchwork jeans was next to impossible so we would have to make and sew the patches ourselves. It was actually the fit and wash that were at the helm here. At the same time, I declared that I had been wanting a pair of good jeans too, which probably would or wouldn’t hit the Indian Market – paperbag jeans.
Now, this is what happened – we decided to get our jeans custom made. Normally, one has to shell out more money on getting anything custom made. We decided that we wanted custom made jeans and not shell out a lot of money at the same time; dicey situation, eh?
We already knew where we could get our jeans made, given how many times we had walked by this place. The place in question here is Mohan Singh Place in Connaught Place( the shops on the ground floor of the Indian Coffee House building). Owing to our laziness, we had always walked by those shops after our usual coffee trips to ICH, however, we were always curious.
So, that day we went to one of the shops at Mohan Singh Place. The shop was lined with all the imaginable colors of Denim. In the first 30 seconds, Aalok and I saw the exact colors we wanted. The owner was up with the idea of creating something he hadn’t made before. To our surprise, we could find similar fabrics for Aalok’s patches at the same shop. The shop owner discussed everything in detail to make sure that everything looked exactly like what we wanted. In this hour long discussion, we were assured that we could get the Jeans within two days! The price also made us screech in excitement- the paperbag was going to cost us INR 1400 and the patchwork INR 1900, which is as close as it comes to high street and definitely not more.
As promised, we got the jeans the very next day, i.e. today, and decided to share our experience. The Jeans looks exactly how we had imagined! The normally Jeans averse Aalok is happy how the fabric after the wash feels soft even if it looks like its usual ruggedly self. The same can be said about the Paperbag jeans.
If we had to rate our experience of getting a custom made jeans from Mohan Singh Place, Connaught Place, we would give it a 10/10. You get great quality, very open to experimentation shopkeepers ( read: good service) and bang for your buck. Honestly, we are never going back to high street jeans, if Aalok needs one after a million years or I want a denim trend before it hits the high street.
