Street Style: Indian Jewelry with Ivanka
It’s god sent, when you meet someone who’s story matches your Theme-of-the-month, which by the way is Indian this month. We are exploring India centric stories the entire August on our website.
Meet Ivanka, whose eclectic choice of styling made us approach her; basics with shiny silver jewelry. In the season( not age, there are no ages in the fashion world) of minimalism, it was quite refreshing to see someone “all-in” with silver.
1. Tell us about yourself.
I am a football journalist trying really hard to become a lawyer. I hoard jewelery like it’s food, and am the curator and silversmith at The Oonth Store. I am essentially from Meerut, but have been trying to make a life in Delhi since the past 8 years. You can find me in the mountains on the weekends, though.
2. How would you describe your sense of style?
It’s more casual and comfortable than trendy. I prefer a lot of dark shades and muted tones. I love accessorising, so that gives me a lot of ground to play with. I usually let the jewelery and shoes stand out, in an otherwise monochromatic look.
3. How would you describe your style when it comes to jewelry?
People usually choose an outfit first, and then go for the accessories. I work in the reverse order. On most days it’s my outfit that needs to work around the jewelery I want to wear, be it for a casual outing, or a wedding. I absolutely love how my silver pieces give me the freedom to dress up or down, and I let my accessories lead the way. I am crazy about amalgamating the traditional Indian jewelery pieces with my modern wardrobe.
4. Your piercings seem intriguing. Do you have any stories to share about them?
The ear piercings were a whim. I was in the market, passed by a piercing shop, and decided to get it done. The nose piercings, however, were meticulously planned. The first one was a result of a pact with a very close friend. We had set aside a date, planned a celebration for when it was done. The first stud was decided weeks in advance. The second, again, was a planned one. I hated the way my nose looks, and decided to shift the attention from the nose to the piercing. Jewelery somehow manages to give an air of confidence, and makes you proud of the flaws. That’s how it works for me.
5. Which are your favorite places to buy silver jewelry/ jewelry?
That’s the best part about silver shopping, you don’t have to go for a brand, or any particular store. I pick my pieces up from the most random streets. Every piece I own, has some quirky story attached to it, that makes it all the more special. I have charms that I have picked up from the tiniest carts in Leh, to pieces that I have ordered from half way across the globe.
6. Do you have any secret tips and tricks on how you can be a better judge of silver jewelry and how to take care of it?
Pure silver is relatively soft and malleable. So most of the jewelery is available in 92.5 sterling silver alloy, that’s 92.5 silver, and 7.5 copper. It’s durable and sturdy enough for everyday wear. It’s suggested to always make sure that the piece you buy has a 92.5 stamp on it, to ensure it’s credibility. You can also move a magnet over the piece, if it attracts, it’s not silver.
Silver jewelery needs to be stored in a cool, dry place. And I always tell my clients to use Colgate tooth powder to clean their tarnished pieces. That’s the easiest and cheapest way to bring the jewelery back to their shining selves.
7. You told us that you run a online jewelry store too, pls share with us its story and what are your future plans with it.
Oonth (@theoonthstore on Instagram) happened to me when I was at my lowest point in life. I was detained in my final semester of law school, and was absolutely distraught. A journalism degree, and two working years later, I had decided to switch careers, and just six months away from the final stage, I was held back. It seemed everybody around had their lives sorted, friends were getting promotions and I was stuck in college! It felt like a pit I couldn’t get out of, when I decided to turn my love for silver into something more. And it’s been a wonderful three months so far. I plan to set up a brick and mortar store somewhere in the mountains soon.
8. What are your favorite fashion trends right now? Especially in Jewelry?
I love the way jewelery let’s me be me. Jewelery doesn’t judge. It allows you to revel in your individuality, and following trends would kind of beat that idea. But if I had to pick something, I’d say it’s amazing how statement pieces have become so easily incorporated with every day wear, instead of being reserved for special occasions.
