Tourist in my own city: First steps in Paharganj

Tourist in my own city:  First steps in Paharganj

Let us admit it; we truly never explore our own city like we explore other cities when we travel. The wanderlust and traveler takes birth and rebirths in mountains, deserts and the beaches of other cities. It just sobs in the corner of our room whilst returning to the daily grind of life, no matter how colorful it maybe. This whole question took us to Paharganj, a place which forms the crux of various pop culture stories ( Dev D , anyone?)

Whether one has lived in Delhi or not, one definitely should have heard the good and the not-so-good things about Paharganj. It is located in North Delhi just near the New Delhi railway station. The place  is known for its cheap hotels and cafés, shady activities and leather & suede merchandise with some Bob Marley’s memories.

Going a little back in time, Paharganj grew popular in the 1970s when the whole influx of foreign tourists, influenced by the hippie culture started making way to Banaras and the Ganges, stopping hood in Delhi. Suddenly, the whole place became a regular for the hippies, who would go back and forth to Banaras and Delhi. They preferred this part of Delhi to any other part , for its cheap hotels and cafés which served piping hot banana pancakes with maple syrup. Cut to 2015, the pancakes are pretty popular and a lot of tourists wearing Om embossed harem pants and Bob Marley Merchandise can be seen strutting in the Main Bazaar.

A rather late morning, we decided to set foot in the chaos and color that is Paharganj, to feel all this and more. The stories which I have heard weren’t really enough for me to satiate the hunger of the writer in me. We reached Paharganj from the R.K. Ashram Marg Metro Station, and the Main Bazaar was hardly a 10 min walk from the Metro Station. The summer sun was at its peak and the bazaar was enlivened by the various sellers and shops which served as an eye candy for the shopper in me. The rickshaw pullers, the hotel wallahs, the “sellers” (you know who we are talking about) looked like a scene out of some pop culture movie/novel. We took this opportunity to click some people and get a taste of real fashion which we were served virtually through Pop Culture. The fashion wasn’t just limited to the Om embossed Pants and Bob Marley bags, but also women dressed up in ripped denims and elegant midis.

I, being the lover of shoes that I am, made way to a shop which sold shoes inspired by the likes of some luxury brands and were accessible to just about anyone. It was the Bittu Chappal house, we photographed all that we liked, and more there.  A pair of sandals for 250INR ($4), leather oxfords for 1200INR ($19) and suede tasseled gladiators for around 900INR($14) that could give some high street brands a run for their money. Nothing went beyond 1200INR($19) in this small and colorful shop which also customizes shoes. I bought myself a pair of black sandals. Apart from shoes, one could find leather slings and backpacks which one cannot really find in other markets of Delhi. The trip ended with me buying rose quartz and lapis lazuli pendants, which I have been trying to find everywhere.

This small trip to Paharganj acquainted me to a new part of the city which didn’t exist for me before. Delhi, being the city it is, truly cannot be classified into one category or called by just one adjective. Same goes  for Paharganj. I plan on coming here again and again and pen my thoughts. Truly, the city you live in, has more than what you think. So, get the wanderlust and traveler out on a regular basis so that you are able to recite your city’s various poetic as well as non-poetic nuances more.
